  • Start: Skanderbeg Square, at the centre of Tirana.

  • Museum option: Bunk’Art 2, in central Tirana.
  • Green-space option: Rinia Park.
Start with central Tirana’s main square

Start with central Tirana’s main square

Skanderbeg Square gives your Tirana walking tour a clear starting point, with several of the city’s cultural landmarks gathered around it. Albania’s official tourism website identifies the square as Tirana’s centre and a meeting place for the National Museum, Clock Tower and Et’hem Bey Mosque.

Begin with the open square and the Skanderbeg Monument. Created by Odhise Paskali, the monument stands 11 metres tall and was inaugurated in 1968, on the 500th anniversary of Skanderbeg’s death. The square reopened after restoration on 10 June 2017; its paving covers nearly 28,000 square metres, and the area is pedestrianised.

The Clock Tower stands near the square and dates to the early 19th century. For more than two centuries, it has served as a time reference for people in Tirana. Take in the square and its surrounding landmarks first, then continue to the nearby historic sites that suit your pace.

The Pyramid, Tirana Castle area and Tanners’ Bridge make a varied follow-on to the central square, combining modern history with older city landmarks.

Construction of the Pyramid began in 1986 and ended in 1988. The building was inaugurated on 14 October 1988 as a mausoleum for Enver Hoxha, and later served as a conference and fair centre. It is now officially known as the Pjetër Arbnori International Cultural Centre. The Pyramid of Tirana visitor guide covers visiting, views and access.

Tanners’ Bridge and Kalaja e Tiranës, or Tirana Castle, are other possible stops before heading toward a museum or park. You can choose one or include both, depending on how much time you want to spend among the historic landmarks.

Bunk’Art 2 offers a museum stop in central Tirana, at Rruga Abdi Toptani. It occupies a former anti-nuclear bunker associated with the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The exhibits cover the Ministry of Internal Affairs, surveillance, state control, political persecution, internment and prisons. Check the Tirana Municipality’s official site before you go; Bunk’Art 2 is open from 09:30 to 18:00 Sunday through Thursday and from 09:30 to 20:00 Friday and Saturday.

If you want to plan this stop in more detail, the Bunk’Art 2 visitor guide focuses on what to know before visiting. The National Historical Museum is another visitor site on Tirana’s official visitor map, alongside the square, Clock Tower, castle, Pyramid and Grand Park.

Rinia Park gives you a green-space stop to round out a central Tirana day. You can place it after the square and historic sites or use it as a pause between city stops.

The Grand Park of Tirana is another option for a longer park visit and appears on the city’s official visitor map. If you want to make the park the main outdoor portion of your day, the Grand Park guide to routes and the lake covers that area specifically.

For a compact itinerary, begin at Skanderbeg Square, add the Clock Tower, then choose between the Pyramid, Tirana Castle and Tanners’ Bridge. Finish at Bunk’Art 2 or Rinia Park, depending on whether you prefer a museum visit or time outdoors.
